General Clumber Spaniel Obedience Tips

Training must be a positive and rewarding situation for both you and the Clumber Spaniel. If you are not in the right mindset for training, don’t even think of starting. Always reward the Clumber Spaniel for heeding your commands to the tee! A reward is anything that your Clumber Spaniel desires and is happy to earn. Snacks are an obvious reward but different treats could be verbal praise and playthings. Many shorter training sessions are typically more effective than one long one. Training should not involve any degrading components or punishment. There should be no yelling, no smacking or hitting, no chain yanking on choke leashes or collars, and absolutely no electric shocking! Every single training session should be enjoyable and confidence-building with praise for a job well done.

Dragging the lead is one of the few displeasing requirements of training a new Clumber Spaniel puppy. Using a head collar for Clumber Spaniel training has become very popular over the last decade. Training with a head collar does have some advantages over the regular training collar. While very simple to use, it’s imperative that head collars are fitted correctly and your Clumber Spaniel gradually introduced to the collar. Head collars are generally more intuitive to use than a typical training collar. Head collars are quite powerful when guiding Clumber Spaniels in difficult situations.
