Picking a pet ID tag for your Kyi-Leo is like buying an insurance policy – you do so with the hopes that you’re never going to need it. The “possible cost” of not having a pet ID tag is more expensive than the “actual cost” of purchasing the pet tag itself.
The kind of pet identification tag that you buy is crucial, so take 5 minutes or so to think it through. Impulsively picking a collar tag because it’s cheap or cute often ends up being foolish, down the road.
Consider this before picking any pet id tag for your Kyi-Leo:
1.What is the level of risk to your Kyi-Leo?
Missing Kyi-Leos are very common – we have all noticed “Lost Kyi-Leo!” signs tacked around town, or deceased dogs lying along the side of the road. If your Kyi-Leo is a pro at escaping your fence, or cannot help tracking a scent, or youthful and energetic, or isn’t properly trained, the possibility of a lost Kyi-Leo is high.
But losing your Kyi-Leo isn’t the only danger.
Sometimes Kyi-Leos are stolen. A pet thief may take Fifi or Spot hoping to get a reward for its return, or to use in dog battles (even small or gentle dogs are susceptible – they can be used as “bait”), or for use in cult rituals.
And what is the risk to your Kyi-Leo if something were to happen to you, the owner?
If you’re a senior adult with a Kyi-Leo, especially if you live by yourself or are in poor health, there’s a high chance that at some point someone else will need to care for your furry friend, perhaps with short notice. And anyone can be hit with a tragedy or disaster which renders you unable to care for your companion.
In this case, will your Kyi-Leo’s temporary or new steward know that Fifi hates cats, or requires medication, or even whether or not Max is housetrained? A pet ID tag that contains more than your name and phone number would be extremely beneficial.
2.What level of risk are you ok with?
Some Kyi-Leos are just more important to their owners, and the risk of losing that particular animal warrants a specific, more expensive kind of pet identification tag. Risk is directly proportional to value.
Realize that there are several ways to calculate the value of your Kyi-Leo. It may be financial (e.g., a purebred Kyi-Leo) or occupational (e.g., a guide dog).
However for most Kyi-Leo owners, the emotional attachment they have with their Kyi-Leo determines its value. For many, Kyi-Leos are like family, impossible to replace and dearly loved.
3.Based on your responses to the two previous questions, what do you need in a pet ID tag?
Pet identification tags come in various materials, shapes and sizes and hold varying amounts of information. Some contain artwork or logos, as well. Usually pet ID tags are designed to be hung from a collar.
At a bare minimum, a pet ID tag should contain the phone number, name and address of the Kyi-Leo’s owner in a legible, durable format. Plastic tags are light but chewed easily. Stainless steel tags are durable and don’t rust or fade. These traditional types of tags can bought from any vet or pet store. They’re inexpensive but the amount of info they can contain is limited to the size of the tag.
Luckily, there are many more options of pet identification tags for your Kyi-Leo these days, such as microchipping, tattooing, digital display tags, pet registry web sites and voice recorded pet identification tags.
One of the most recent entrants in the pet identification market is the high-tech USB drive that hangs off your Kyi-Leo’s collar (or is attached to their cage) and which holds 64MB of data (including comprehensive medical and diet information). The tiny USB drive is encased in a sturdy plastic case and can be used in any computer, where it is readily updated and easy to print sections for sharing with your vet or pet sitter. There are also bluetooth devices for tracking, but their range is small, due to bluetooth technological limits.
