To teach your Spanish Mastiff tricks, even the simple ones, you need to carry some of his favorite treats, go to a quiet suitable location and hold the training sessions to under fifteen minutes or the Spanish Mastiff will begin to get bored. Don’t forget that when he gets something correct offer him lots of appreciation and a reward snack, but be careful not to get him overly excited or he might lose concentration.
Teach your Spanish Mastiff to give you his paw
To get your Spanish Mastiff to give you his paw, initially get him to sit, then as you say the word ‘paw’ take his paw in your hand and give him a snack. After that repeat this, and after a couple of times don’t take his paw so fast. State the word ‘paw’, count to 1 and only then take it. You need to notice that he is raising his paw upward as you state the word. If he doesn’t then return to stating it at the same time. Do it a couple more times then slow your reaction again. After just a few sessions most Spanish Mastiffs pick this trick up rather quickly.
Teach your Spanish Mastiff to offer you a high five
Like a great deal of tricks the high 5 is a continuation of a more basic trick, in this case the paw trick. Hold a treat in between your fingers and lift your hand a bit higher than you would for the paw trick. When I first began doing this trick I had a medium sized dog, so I began with the hoop 6 inches from the floor and slowly increased it to waist height. In the case that you have a smaller sized dog you might desire to begin with the hoop on the ground so he simply goes through the hoop and then gradually raise it as he gets accustomed to the trick.
