To teach your Neapolitan Mastiff tricks, even the simple ones, you should provide some small snacks, go to a quiet suitable location and keep the teaching sessions to under 15 minutes or your Neapolitan Mastiff will begin to get bored. Take note that when he gets something right give him lots of praise and a reward snack, yet beware not to get him extremely excited or he will lose concentration.
Teach your Neapolitan Mastiff to offer you his paw
To train your Neapolitan Mastiff to offer you his paw, initially get him to sit, then as you state the word ‘paw’ take his paw in your hand and offer him a treat. Now do this again, and after a few practices don’t take his paw so quickly. State the word ‘paw’, count to 1 and only then take it. You must discover that he is bringing his paw up as you say the word. If he doesn’t then go back to stating it at the very same time. Do it a couple of more times then slow your response again. After two or three sessions most Neapolitan Mastiffs pick this trick up rather easily.
Teach your Neapolitan Mastiff to offer you a high five
Like a great deal of tricks the high 5 is a progression of a simpler trick, and in this case it’s the paw trick. Hold a snack in your fingers and lift your hand just a little higher than you would raise it for the paw trick. Your Neapolitan Mastiff will believe you wish to do the paw trick and will grab for the snack with his paw as we trained him in the prior trick. Once he rises you say “high five” and offer your Neapolitan Mastiff the snack. As soon as your Neapolitan Mastiff has mastered the paw trick this one should be really easy to learn and with only a couple of sessions he will be doing it on hand signal instead of voice control.
Teach your Neapolitan Mastiff to leap through a hoop
Before you start this 1 I would just like to ask you to be a little sensible and not hold the hoop higher than necessary as you do not really want your Neapolitan Mastiff to harm himself while practicing the trick. Set your Neapolitan Mastiff to one side of a hula hoop, get him to take notice of your hand on the opposite side of the hoop. Place a treat in your hand and offer the Neapolitan Mastiff the direction to stop sitting. At first he might try to walk around or beneath the hoop. In the event that this happens start once again. Your Neapolitan Mastiff wants the treat and will soon discover that going around or below doesn’t get it so he will soon start going through it. When he does, state “hoop” and give him the treat. He’ll soon be jumping through the hoop upon the command of “hoop”. When I first started doing this trick I owned a medium sized dog, so I began with the hoop 6 inches from the floor and gradually increased it to waist height. If you possess a smaller sized dog you may want to start with the hoop touching the floor so he just goes through the hoop and then slowly lift it once he gets accustomed to the trick.
I trust you have enjoyed learning these 3 tricks you can teach your Neapolitan Mastiff. Have patience with your Neapolitan Mastiff and most importantly, have a good time!
