To teach your Miniature Shar Pei tricks, even simple ones, you need to have some yummy treats, be in a quiet suitable location and hold the instruction sessions to 10 – 15 minutes or your Miniature Shar Pei will begin to get tired. Always remember when he gets something correct give him lots of praise and a reward treat, just beware not to get him overly ecstatic or he can lose focus.
Teach your Miniature Shar Pei to give you his paw
To train your Miniature Shar Pei to give you his paw, first get him to sit, then as you state the word ‘paw’ take his paw in your hand and offer him a snack. Then do this again, and after a few times do not take his paw so fast. Say the word ‘paw’, count to one and then after that take it. You need to observe that he is bringing his paw up as you say the word. If he does not then return to saying it at the very same time. Do it a couple more times then slow your reaction again. After a few sessions most Miniature Shar Peis pick this trick up quite easily.
Teach your Miniature Shar Pei to give you a high 5
Like a great deal of tricks the high 5 is a progression of a simpler trick, and in this case the paw trick. Place a treat in your fingers and raise your hand just a little higher than you would raise it for the paw trick. Your Miniature Shar Pei will believe you want to do the paw trick and will reach for the snack with his paw as we had instructed him earlier. Once he rises you say “high five” and give him the snack. When I first started doing this trick I had a medium sized dog, so I started with the hoop 6 inches from the ground and slowly increased it to waist height. If you possess a smaller sized dog you might want to begin with the hoop touching the ground so he just goes through the hoop and after that slowly raise it as he gets used to the trick.
