To teach your Laekenois tricks, even simple ones, you should carry some of his favorite treats, be in a quiet suitable location and always keep the instruction sessions to under 15 minutes or your Laekenois will start to get bored. Remember when he gets something right give him great deals of appreciation and a reward snack, just beware not to get him extremely fired up or he could lose concentration.
Teach your Laekenois to offer you his paw
To get your Laekenois to give you his paw, initially get him to sit, then as you say the word ‘paw’ take his paw in your hand and give him a snack. After that do this again, and after a few practices do not take his paw so quickly. State the word ‘paw’, count to 1 and then take it. You should observe that he is bringing his paw upward as you say the word. If he does not then go back to saying it at the same time. Do it a couple more times then slow your response again. After 2 or 3 sessions most Laekenoiss pick this trick up rather quickly.
Teach your Laekenois to give you a high five
Like a great deal of tricks the high 5 is a progression of an easier trick, in this case it’s the paw trick. Hold a treat in your two fingers and raise your hand a little higher than you’d raise it for the paw trick. Your Laekenois will expect you want to perform the paw trick and will reach for the snack with his paw as we had trained him in the previous trick. Once he reaches up you state “high 5” and give your Laekenois the treat. As soon as your Laekenois has mastered the paw trick this 1 will most likely be really simple to master and with just a few sessions he will be accomplishing it from your hand signal rather than voice control.
Teach your Laekenois to jump through a hoop
Before you start this 1 I would just like to ask you to be a little reasonable and not suspend the hoop too high as you don’t want your Laekenois to harm himself while performing the trick. Set your Laekenois on one side of a hula hoop, get him to focus on your hand on the other side of the hoop. Place a treat in your hand and give the Laekenois the command to stop sitting. Initially he may try to go around or under the hoop. When this takes place begin once again. Your Laekenois wants the snack and will soon find out that going around or beneath does not work so he will soon begin going through it. Once he does, say “hoop” and offer him the treat. He will quickly be leaping through the hoop upon the command of “hoop”. When I started off doing this trick I had a medium sized dog, so I began with the hoop 6 inches from the ground and gradually lifted it to waist high. On the occasion that you own a smaller dog you may want to start with the hoop touching the ground so he simply goes through the hoop and then slowly lift it more as he gets accustomed to the trick.
I hope you have enjoyed these 3 tricks you can teach your Laekenois. Have patience with your Laekenois and most of all, have fun!
