To teach your Griffon Bruxellois tricks, even simple ones, you should get some of his favorite snacks, go to a remote suitable place and manage to keep the coaching sessions to under 15 minutes or the Griffon Bruxellois will start to get bored. Bear in mind when he gets something right give him lots of appreciation and a reward snack, just be cautious not to get him too thrilled or he might perhaps lose concentration.
Teach your Griffon Bruxellois to offer you his paw
To teach your Griffon Bruxellois to give you his paw, initially get him to sit, then as you say the word ‘paw’ take his paw in your hand and offer him a treat. Then do this again, and after a few practices don’t take his paw so quickly. State the word ‘paw’, count to 1 and then take it. You need to observe that he is raising his paw upward as you state the word. If he does not then go back to saying it at the very same time. Do it a couple more times then slow your response again. After two or three sessions most Griffon Bruxelloiss pick this trick up rather easily.
Teach your Griffon Bruxellois to give you a high five
Like a lot of tricks the high 5 is a continuation of an earlier trick, and in this case it’s the paw trick. Hold a treat in your two fingers and lift your hand somewhat higher than you would for the paw trick. Your Griffon Bruxellois will believe you wish to do the paw trick and will grab for the snack with his paw as we taught him earlier. As he reaches up you state “high five” and give your Griffon Bruxellois the treat. When your Griffon Bruxellois has mastered the paw trick this one will probably be extremely simple to understand and with only a couple of sessions he will be performing it from your hand signal rather than from your voice.
Teach your Griffon Bruxellois to jump through a hoop
Before you start this one I would just like to ask you to be a little practical and not suspend the hoop too high up as you don’t really want your Griffon Bruxellois to harm himself while practicing the trick. Set your Griffon Bruxellois to 1 side of a hula hoop, get him to take notice of your hand on the opposite side of the hoop. Hold a snack in your hand and give the Griffon Bruxellois the direction to stop sitting. Initially he may attempt to go around or below the hoop. When this happens start again. Your Griffon Bruxellois wants the treat and will soon find out that going around or beneath does not work so he will quickly start going through it. The minute he does, state “hoop” and offer him the snack. He’ll quickly be jumping through the hoop on the command of “hoop”. When I first started doing this trick I owned a medium sized dog, so I began with the hoop six inches from the ground and gradually raised it to waist height. If you have a smaller dog you may desire to begin with the hoop on the floor so he just goes through the hoop and after that gradually raise it once he gets used to the trick.
