To teach your Giant Schnauzer tricks, even the simple ones, you should get some tasty snacks, be in a secluded suitable location and always keep the instruction sessions to under 15 minutes or the Giant Schnauzer will start to get tired. Bear in mind when he gets something right give him lots of appreciation and a reward treat, yet beware not to get him extremely fired up or he will lose concentration.
Teach your Giant Schnauzer to offer you his paw
To get your Giant Schnauzer to offer you his paw, initially get him to sit, then as you say the word ‘paw’ take his paw in your hand and offer him a treat. Then repeat this, and after a couple of practices don’t take his paw so quickly. State the word ‘paw’, count to 1 and then take it. You should see that he is bringing his paw up as you state the word. If he does not then return to saying it at the same time. Do it a couple more times then slow your reaction once again. After 2 or 3 sessions most Giant Schnauzers pick this trick up rather easily.
Teach your Giant Schnauzer to give you a high 5
Like a lot of tricks the high 5 is a progression of a basic trick, and in this case it’s the paw trick. Hold a treat in between your two fingers and lift your hand a little higher than you’d raise it for the paw trick. Your Giant Schnauzer will think you wish to do the paw trick and will grab for the snack with his paw as we taught him earlier. Once he reaches up you say “high 5” and give your Giant Schnauzer the snack. As soon as your Giant Schnauzer has mastered the paw trick this 1 should be very easy to learn and with only a few sessions he will be doing it from your hand signal rather than from your voice.
Teach your Giant Schnauzer to jump through a hoop
Before you begin this one I would just like to ask you to be a little practical and not suspend the hoop too high as you don’t really want your Giant Schnauzer to injure himself while carrying out the trick. Place your Giant Schnauzer on 1 side of a hula hoop, get him to pay attention to your hand on the opposite side of the hoop. Place a treat in your hand and give the Giant Schnauzer the command to stop sitting. Initially he may try to go around or below the hoop. In the event that this happens start once again. Your Giant Schnauzer desires the treat and will quickly discover that going around or below doesn’t work so he’ll quickly begin going through it. Whenever he does, say “hoop” and offer him the snack. He’ll soon be leaping through the hoop on the command of “hoop”. When I started teaching this trick I owned a medium sized dog, so I began with the hoop six inches from the floor and slowly brought it to waist high. In case you have a smaller dog you might wish to start with the hoop on the ground so he just goes through the hoop and after that gradually lift it once he gets accustomed to the trick.
I hope you have enjoyed learning these 3 tricks you can teach your Giant Schnauzer. Have patience with your Giant Schnauzer and most importantly, have fun!
