To teach your Bluetick Coonhound tricks, even simple ones, you should carry some of his favorite treats, be in a remote suitable place and try to keep the learning sessions to 10 – 15 minutes or your Bluetick Coonhound will begin to get tired. Always remember when he gets something right give him lots of appreciation and a reward snack, though beware not to get him too fired up or he will lose focus.
Teach your Bluetick Coonhound to give you his paw
To teach your Bluetick Coonhound to offer you his paw, initially get him to sit, then as you say the word ‘paw’ take his paw in your hand and offer him a treat. Next do it again, and after a few practices do not take his paw so quickly. Say the word ‘paw’, count to 1 and after that take it. You need to notice that he is raising his paw up as you say the word. If he does not then go back to stating it at the very same time. Do it a few more times then slow your reaction again. After a few sessions most Bluetick Coonhounds pick this trick up rather quickly.
Teach your Bluetick Coonhound to offer you a high five
Like a great deal of tricks the high five is a continuation of a basic trick, in this case the paw trick. Hold a snack in your two fingers and raise your hand a little higher than you’d do for the paw trick. Your Bluetick Coonhound will believe you wish to perform the paw trick and will grab for the treat with his paw as we had instructed him earlier. While he reaches up you state “high five” and give him the snack. As soon as your Bluetick Coonhound has mastered the paw trick this one will likely be extremely simple to understand and with just a couple of sessions he will be accomplishing it from your hand signal instead of from your voice.
Teach your Bluetick Coonhound to leap through a hoop
Before you begin this one I would simply like to ask you to be a little reasonable and not suspend the hoop higher than necessary as you don’t want your Bluetick Coonhound to harm himself while practicing the trick. Set your Bluetick Coonhound to 1 side of a hula hoop, get him to pay attention to your hand on the opposite side of the hoop. Hold a snack in your hand and give the Bluetick Coonhound the direction to stop sitting. At first he may attempt to walk around or underneath the hula hoop. When this takes place begin once again. Your Bluetick Coonhound wants the treat and will quickly discover that walking around or below doesn’t get it done so he will soon start going through it. If he does, state “hoop” and offer him the treat. He will quickly be jumping through the hoop upon the command of “hoop”. When I began doing this trick I had a medium sized dog, so I started with the hoop six inches from the ground and slowly increased it to waist height. On the occasion that you possess a smaller dog you may wish to start with the hoop touching the floor so he just goes through the hoop and then gradually elevate it more as he gets used to the trick.
I hope you have enjoyed learning these 3 tricks you can teach your Bluetick Coonhound. Have patience with your Bluetick Coonhound and most of all, have a good time!
