All of us dream of training the perfect Sarplaninac, a puppy that is a CGC or canine good citizen and is well behaved and responsible at all times. Well dreams really do come true when the teaching is done with kindness and commitment. Never forget pups learn from the first day and really need to be advised what is correct, what isn’t, and ideal socialization.
Puppies behave like young children, they demand continuous supervision and teaching. Training a pup need not be a chore, all you have to keep in mind are a few straightforward guidelines:
10 Tips For Training Your Sarplaninac
- Up until your pup is trained, you must keep an eye on her at all times. Once you aren’t able to then you should cage her. Create a calendar for the pup, that will enable her to settle down easily. The calendar needs to incorporate things such as hourly potty visits, eating times, rest periods, walks, play time, education, etc. A pup that has a busy day has no time at all to get bored or get into mischief.
- Teach the pup to appreciate you. Sarplaninacs live in packs and naturally comply with a leader. Once you establish your dominance in no uncertain terms then training will come easy because the pup will comply with you at all times and not challenge your power.
- Use exclusively constructive training methods. Do not yell at, smack, or punish your Sarplaninac. It’s not only terrible but can bring about behavioral issues. Use of electric shocks, prong collars, sprays, etc could easily injure the animal.
- Show the pup “nothing in this life is free.” This is a method of teaching that is widely acknowledged as a reliable coaching method. As you execute this, the pup will find out that to get anything like love, a walk, or snack, he has to behave well.
- Explain the meaning of “No,” from the first day. Do not endorse behaviors such as leaping, mouthing, tug-o-war, snarling, or running out of open gates and doorways. Applaud courtesy and dismiss or walk away when there is bad behavior. The pup will realize that if he is mischievous he will lose his companion/playmate.
- To improve a behavior you will need to witness the Sarplaninac in the act and startle him by rattling a bottle of rocks. As soon as you have done this make him adjust his behavior and promptly offer him a treat and praise. Sarplaninacs do not think of what took place previously so reprimanding him after an occurrence is futile.
- Always call/use his name favorably. Do not ever say “Bad TOM,” or “No Tom,” this will result in confusion and the Sarplaninac will think that if you call his name then it is for something bad. The puppy must link his name with pleasant times like hugs, petting, strolls, snacks, and such. If this takes place he will respond happily as soon as you call his name.
- Develop a teaching schedule that is short and sweet, about 10 minutes three times a day. Extensive repeated trainings can be boring and the Sarplaninac is going to lose interest in learning. Help make lessons exciting and use trick training to explain commands like sit, down, come and so on.
- Connect with the Sarplaninac and both of you will definitely get a kick out of your lessons. The pup needs to expect spending quality time with you and not steer clear of you by breaking away or taking cover. Make sure to socialize the young dog early on. Socialization is one of the most significant teachings. The Sarplaninac will need to learn to be around other animals, people, sounds, vehicles, and other activities. Therefore, gradually introduce the pup when he is small to common events and noises. Take him to the mall/ dog park, introduce him to kids and other animals, and make him unafraid of the vacuum cleaner and water hose.
- Master everything about crate training, leash walking, house breaking, and food training. These are rudimentary lessons that every Sarplaninac puppy needs to understand. Understand all the mannerisms and qualities of the breed. This will give you useful ideas on how to properly instruct the puppy.
As a Sarplaninac parent you have many options. You could certainly decide to train the Sarplaninac yourself or enroll at a skilled professional training school. Training a Sarplaninac has numerous steps: preschool, behavior training, doggy sports, presenting and conformation, and other elements like therapy dogs, hearing dogs, and so forth. What level you decide to teach depends upon you along with the brainpower of your Sarplaninac. As you recognize, different dogs, like human beings, possess varied talents. Choose well and both you and your Sarplaninac pup will have exciting times together.
