Training Your Welsh Terrier To Sit

Teach Your Welsh Terrier to Sit

Are you struggling to teach your Welsh Terrier to sit? The skill of sitting up is easily taught to little dogs, yet much larger canines are a different story. It is hard for them to sustain their balance.

Teach Your Welsh Terrier to Sit: Groundwork

Sitting is one of the 1st techniques that should be taught to a Welsh Terrier and provides the groundwork for innumerable other tricks. In order to train a Welsh Terrier to sit up, put together some treats as a perk, and put your Welsh Terrier on her backside in a corner, to ensure that she is not able to fall either backward or sideways and has very little or no room to lose balance.

Teach Your Welsh Terrier to Sit: Acquaint Her With The Sound of The Words

Prevent her from falling to the front by holding 1 hand under her chin and with the other hand dangle her snack above the Welsh Terrier’s nose. Keep repeating deliberately and distinctly, “sit up.” Do not make her sit for too long at any one time, however repeat the training regularly and reward her regularly with lots of praise and treats.

Teach Your Welsh Terrier to Sit: Help Her Maintain Balance

In the 1st lesson your Welsh Terrier will require considerable help from you to keep her from pitching forward, but as she gains control of her muscles and understands what you want her to do, she’ll rely less and less upon your hand to hold her in position. Then you can gradually give her less help and support till you will basically have to keep one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her neck or chin, to be in position to prevent her falling forward; later on you might remove this hand altogether and merely suspend the snack right above the level of her face.

Teach Your Welsh Terrier To Sit: Remove the Assistance Slowly

After consistent training your Welsh Terrier will sit up long after you make her. The next step is she should be set up against your wall, so as to offer her a support for her back. Only after she has mastered this and can keep her place effortlessly, practice with her up against chair legs, pillows or other things that give her less and less assistance. In time she will be able to sustain her equilibrium and sit up without having something to lean against.

Teach Your Welsh Terrier to Sit: Putting It All Together

During all these lessons the phrase "sit up" will have been instilled upon her subconscious through constant repetition. Lastly is the final training to teach your Welsh Terrier to sit up as soon as she hears the phrase. There's a great chance, if she has been carefully taught, you will just have to get her out into the room, display to her a treat, hold it up a suitable distance from the ground, say "sit" and she will obey. Then you'll just give her the reward while still in position.

The only criteria for excellence is to practice with her multiple times a day until she can sit up when commanded to and without being shown a snack; give her the treats only after she has obeyed the order.

Teach Your Welsh Terrier Other Tricks

You have now the basis for teaching your Welsh Terrier many other tricks. She can now learn to beg by moving your hand up and down just in front of her paws, which she'll move in sync with yours. She can also learn to salute by bringing one paw to the side of her head, or to keep something in her mouth, or to wear a hat on her head or wear other articles of clothing.

When training a Welsh Terrier to tolerate being clothed, don't try to get her to wear too many things simultaneously. Try her at first with just a hat. Once she becomes familiar with that you could put on a coat and over time introduce her to more clothes.

Appreciate "teaching your Welsh Terrier the sit up trick" and most importantly have fun in the process!
