Training Your Azawakh To Sit

Teach Your Azawakh to Sit

Are you attempting to teach your Azawakh to sit? The technique of sitting up is quickly taught to petite dogs, though bigger pooches are a different story. It’s hard for them to sustain their balance.

Teach Your Azawakh to Sit: Readiness

Sitting is one of the initial techniques that should be taught to a Azawakh and forms the foundation for many other skills. To train a Azawakh to sit up, prepare some snacks as a perk, and put the Azawakh on her butt in the corner, to make sure that she won’t be able to fall either backward or sideways and has very little or no space to lose balance.

Teach Your Azawakh to Sit: Familiarize Her With The Command

Keep her from falling forward by securing your hand underneath her chin and with your other hand dangle the snack above the Azawakh’s face. Keep repeating intelligibly and clearly, “sit.” Do not make her sit up too long at one time, but repeat the instruction routinely and reward her regularly with a lot of recognition and treats.

Teach Your Azawakh to Sit: Help Her Maintain Balance

In the first lesson she will require a surprising amount of help and support from your hand to prevent her from pitching forward, but as she gains better control of the balancing muscles and comprehends what you want her to do, she’ll rely less upon your hand to hold her in position. Gradually, you can give your Azawakh less help and support up until you will simply have to keep one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her neck or chin, to be set to stop her falling forward; later on you can most likely remove the hand entirely and simply dangle the treat right over the level of her face.

Teach Your Azawakh To Sit: Remove the Help Gradually Over Time

After steady training she will sit up for a good while after you make her. The next step is she should be set up against a wall, so as to provide her help for her back. Immediately after she has picked up this and can hold her posture effortlessly, practice with her up against chair legs, cushions or other objects that give her less and less help. Gradually she will get the hang of how to keep her balance and sit without something to lean against.

Teach Your Azawakh to Sit: Putting It All Together

During all these lessons the command "sit up" will have been ingrained upon her psyche through frequent repetition. Now is the final training to teach your Azawakh to sit up whenever she hears the words. It's highly likely, if she has been carefully taught, you will merely have to call her out into the room, reveal to her a reward, hold it up a suitable distance from the floor, say "sit up" and she will obey. Then you'll give her the snack while still in place.

The only requirement for perfection is to practice with your Azawakh multiple times daily until she sits when told and without being shown a treat; give her the snacks only once she has adhered to the direction.

Teach Your Azawakh Other Tricks

You have now the foundation for teaching your Azawakh many other skills. She can now be taught how to beg by waving your hand up and down in front of her paws, which she will move in sync with yours. She also can be taught to salute by moving one paw to the side of her head, or to hold an object in her mouth, or to wear a cap on her head or wear other clothing.

In training a Azawakh to accept being clothed, do not try to make her wear too many garments at the same time. Try at first with just a hat. Soon after she gets adjusted to that you can put on a coat and progressively introduce her to more garments.

Get a kick out of "teaching your Azawakh the sit up trick" and most importantly have fun in the process!
