Tips For Training Your English Bulldog To Sit

Teach Your English Bulldog to Sit

Are you working to teach your English Bulldog to sit? The technique of sitting up is regularly taught to little dogs, yet much bigger doggies are a different story. It’s tricky for them to sustain their equilibrium.

Teach Your English Bulldog to Sit: Groundwork

Sitting up is one of the very first skills that should be taught to a English Bulldog and lays the groundwork for lots of other techniques. In order to train a English Bulldog to sit up, prepare some treats as a perk, and set your English Bulldog on her haunches in a corner, to make sure that she won’t be able to fall either aft or sideways and has very little or no room to lose balance.

Teach Your English Bulldog to Sit: Acquaint Her With The Phrase

Protect her from tilting forward by sticking 1 hand underneath her chin and using the second hand hold the treat above your English Bulldog’s nose. Keep repeating intelligibly and clearly, “sit up.” Don’t make her sit up too long at one time, but do repeat the lesson frequently and reward her often with a lot of appreciation and snacks.

Teach Your English Bulldog to Sit: Help Her Balance

In her first lesson she will require a lot of assistance from your hand to prevent her from pitching forward, but as she gains control of her balancing muscles and realises what you want, she will count less and less upon your hand to hold her steady. Gradually, you can give your English Bulldog less help and support till you’ll just have to leave one hand in position two or three inches from her chin or neck, to be set to prevent her from falling forward; in the future you can most likely take away this hand entirely and just simply dangle the reward right above the height of her face.

Teach Your English Bulldog To Sit: Remove the Help Incrementally

With constant practice your English Bulldog will sit up for a long time after you set her up. Next she should be set against your wall, so as to give her a support for her back only. Immediately after she has grasped this and can maintain her posture effortlessly, rehearse with her using chair legs, cushions or other items that give her less and less help. At some point she will get the hang of how to maintain her balance and sit in the absence of anything to lean against.

Teach Your English Bulldog to Sit: Putting It All Together

During the course of all this training the phrase "sit up" will have been instilled upon her mind by means of constant repetition. Last is the final lesson to teach your English Bulldog to sit up right after she hears the command. Chances are, if she has been properly taught, you will only have to get her out in the room, show her a reward, hold it up a reasonable distance from the ground, say "sit" and she'll obey. Then you'll give her the treat while still in place.

The only condition for flawlessness is to rehearse with her several times daily until she will sit when told and without being shown a reward; give her the snacks only after she has adhered to the command.

Teach Your English Bulldog Other Tricks

You have now the basis for teaching your English Bulldog many other tricks. She now can be taught to beg by moving your hand up and down just in front of her paws, which she will move in conjunction with yours. She also can be taught to salute by bringing one paw to the side of her head, or to hold something in her mouth, or to wear a cap on her head or wear other clothing.

While training a English Bulldog to accept being dressed up, do not try to get her to wear too many items at the same time. Try at first with a cap. Soon after she becomes adjusted to that you can put on a jacket and incrementally introduce her to more clothes.

Get a kick out of "teaching your English Bulldog the sit up trick" and most importantly have fun along the way!
