Are you trying to teach your Vizsla to sit? The technique of sitting up is effortlessly taught to little dogs, yet bigger doggies are a different story. It is challenging for them to maintain their balance.

Teach Your Vizsla to Sit: Preparation

Sitting is one of the 1st techniques that should be taught to your Vizsla and provides the foundation for numerous other techniques. In order to train a Vizsla to sit up, put together some treats as a reward, and put the Vizsla on her butt in the corner, to ensure she won’t fall either backward or sideways and has very little or no space to stumble.

Teach Your Vizsla to Sit: Familiarize Her With The Phrase

Protect her from falling forward by securing one hand on her chin and using your other hand dangle her reward above your Vizsla’s nose. Keep saying clearly and intelligibly, “sit.” Don’t make her sit up too long at one time, however repeat the instruction routinely and reward her regularly with a lot of kudos and treats.

Teach Your Vizsla to Sit: Help Her Maintain Balance

During the 1st lesson your Vizsla will call for a lot of assistance from your hand to keep her from tumbling forward, but as she gains control of her balancing muscles and sees what you want her to do, she’ll depend less and less on your hand to keep her steady. Gradually, you can give your Vizsla less help til you will just have to leave one hand in position two or three inches from her neck or chin, to be available to stop her from falling forward; in the future you can easily take away the hand and merely dangle the snack right above the level of her face.

Teach Your Vizsla To Sit: Remove the Assistance Gradually Over Time

With consistent training your Vizsla will stay seated long after you tell her to. Next she should be set up against your wall, so as to provide her a support for her back. When she has understood this and can keep her place easily, rehearse with her using chair legs, pillows or other items that provide her less and less assistance. Subsequently she will be trained to preserve her equilibrium and sit up without having anything to rest on.




Teach Your Vizsla to Sit: Putting It All Together

During all this training the phrase "sit up" will have been instilled upon her mind with the assistance of frequent repetition. Now here's the final lesson to teach your Vizsla to sit up as quickly as she hears the command. Chances are, if she has been properly trained, you will just have to summon her out into the room, show her a treat, hold it up a reasonable distance from the floor, say "sit up" and she'll obey. Then just give her the snack while still in position.

The only condition for excellence is to practice with her multiple times a day until she will sit up when commanded to and without being shown a treat; give her the treats only after she has adhered to the direction.

Teach Your Vizsla Other Tricks

You have now the method for teaching your Vizsla many other tricks. She can now learn how to beg by moving your hand up and down in front of her paws, which she'll move in sync with yours. She also can learn to salute by moving one paw to the side of her head, or to hold a wooden pipe in her mouth, or to wear a hat on her head or wear other clothing.

While training a Vizsla to submit to being clothed, don't try to get her to wear too many items at one time. Try at first with a cap. Soon after she gets familiar with that you can put on a coat and gradually introduce her to the other garments.
