Tips For Teaching Your Standard Schnauzer To Sit

Teach Your Standard Schnauzer to Sit

Are you struggling to teach your Standard Schnauzer to sit? The skill of sitting up is regularly taught to very small dogs, but much larger doggies are another story. It is hard for them to sustain their equilibrium.

Teach Your Standard Schnauzer to Sit: Prep work

Sitting is one of the first techniques that you should teach to a Standard Schnauzer and is the groundwork for lots of other techniques. In order to train a Standard Schnauzer to sit up, prepare some snacks as a reward, and set the Standard Schnauzer on her rump in a corner, to ensure that she won’t fall either backward or sideways and has very little or no room to stumble.

Teach Your Standard Schnauzer to Sit: Acquaint Her With The Phrase

Prevent her from falling forward by securing one hand underneath her chin and using the second hand dangle her snack above the Standard Schnauzer’s nose. Keep saying distinctly and deliberately, “sit.” Do not make her sit up for too long at one time, however repeat the instruction routinely and reward her often with loads of cheers and treats.

Teach Your Standard Schnauzer to Sit: Help Her Stay Balanced

During her beginner lesson she will need significant help and support from your hand to prevent her from falling forward, but as she gets control of her balancing muscles and grasps what you want, she’ll rely less and less on your hand to hold her steady. Then you can gradually give her less support til you will simply have to keep one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her chin or neck, to be waiting to prevent her from falling forward; later on you can probably take away the hand and merely dangle the snack right over the level of your Standard Schnauzer’s head.

Teach Your Standard Schnauzer To Sit: Remove the Assistance Progressively

After consistent training your Standard Schnauzer will stay seated for a long time after you get her to sit. The next step is she should be set up against the wall, so as to give her support for her back only. Immediately after she has gotten the knack of this and can keep her position easily, rehearse with her against chair legs, cushions or other things that provide her less and less assistance. Eventually she will learn how to preserve her balance and sit without relying on anything to rest against.

Teach Your Standard Schnauzer to Sit: Putting It All Together

In the course of all these lessons the command "sit up" will have been instilled upon her subconscious by means of constant repetition. Last comes the final lesson to teach your Standard Schnauzer to sit up as quickly as she hears the words. There's a great chance, if she has been diligently trained, you will simply have to get her out in the room, show her a reward, hold it up a reasonable distance from the ground, say "sit" and she'll obey. Then you give her the treat while still in position.

The only criteria for excellence is to rehearse with your Standard Schnauzer multiple times a day until she sits on command and without being shown a snack; give her the treats only once she has adhered to the direction.

Teach Your Standard Schnauzer Other Tricks

You have now the groundwork for teaching your Standard Schnauzer many other tricks. She can now learn how to beg by moving your hand up and down in front of her paws, which she'll move in coordination with yours. She also can learn to salute by moving one paw to the side of her head, or to keep a toy in her mouth, or to wear a hat on her head or wear other articles of clothing.

While instructing a Standard Schnauzer to tolerate being dressed up, don't try to get her to wear too many things at the same time. Try her at first with a cap. After she gets familiar with that you can put on a jacket and steadily introduce her to more garments.

Enjoy "teaching your Standard Schnauzer the sit up trick" and most importantly have fun at the same time!
