Are you trying to teach your Affenpinscher to sit? The technique of sitting up is quite easily taught to little dogs, though much bigger pooches are another story. It’s tough for them to sustain their equilibrium.
Teach Your Affenpinscher to Sit: Anticipation
Sitting is one of the very first skills that you should teach to a Affenpinscher and forms the foundation for numerous other skills. In order to train a Affenpinscher to sit up, organize some treats as a perk, and place the Affenpinscher on her backside in a corner, so she is not able to fall either aft or sideways and has very little or no space to lose balance.
Teach Your Affenpinscher to Sit: Familiarize Her With The Words
Keep her from pitching to the front by sticking one hand under her chin and with your other hand hold her treat above your Affenpinscher’s face. Keep saying distinctly and deliberately, “sit.” Do not force her to sit up for too long at any one time, but do repeat the instruction often and reward her often with loads of recognition and snacks.
Teach Your Affenpinscher to Sit: Help Her Keep Her Balance
During her very first lesson she will demand considerable help from your hand to keep her from tumbling forward, but as she gets better control of her balancing muscles and grasps what you want her to do, she’ll rely less and less upon your hand to keep her steady. Gradually, you can give your Affenpinscher less assistance till you will basically have to maintain one hand in position two or three inches from her chin or neck, to be ready to prevent her falling forward; eventually you might take away this hand entirely and merely hold the reward right above the height of her head.
Teach Your Affenpinscher To Sit: Remove the Assistance Gradually Over Time
With regular practice she will sit up for a long time after you set her up. Then she should be set against a wall, so as to offer her support for her back. Once she has learned this and can maintain her place easily, practice with her using chair legs, pillows or other things that offer her less and less assistance. Subsequently she will be able to sustain her equilibrium and sit without something to rest on.
Teach Your Affenpinscher to Sit: Putting It All Together
During all these lessons the phrase "sit up" will have been instilled upon her mind by means of regular repetition. Now comes the final training to teach your Affenpinscher to sit up as soon as she hears the words. There's a good chance, if she has been diligently trained, you will simply have to get her out into the room, show a reward, hold it up a reasonable distance from the floor, say "sit up or sit" and she'll obey. Then give her the snack while still in place.
The only necessity for excellence is to train with your Affenpinscher several times daily until she can sit when commanded to and without being shown a treat; give her the treats only after she has adhered to the order.
Teach Your Affenpinscher Other Tricks
You have now the method for teaching your Affenpinscher many other skills. She now can be taught to beg by moving your hand up and down just in front of her paws, which she will move in conjunction with yours. She can also be taught to salute by moving one paw up to the side of her head, or to keep something in her mouth, or to wear a hat on her head or wear other articles of clothing.
In instructing a Affenpinscher to accept being clothed, do not try to get her to wear too many garments at the same time. Try at first with a cap. Only after she gets used to that you could put on a jacket and over time introduce her to more garments.
