Are you aiming to teach your Welsh Springer Spaniel to sit? The skill of sitting up is regularly taught to small dogs, but much bigger pooches are a different story. It is challenging for them to keep their equilibrium.

Teach Your Welsh Springer Spaniel to Sit: Prep

Sitting is one of the fundamental skills that you should teach to your Welsh Springer Spaniel and is the ground work for plenty of other skills. To train a Welsh Springer Spaniel to sit up, organize some treats as a perk, and place the Welsh Springer Spaniel on her butt in a corner, so she is not able to fall either aft or sideways and has very little or no room to stumble.

Teach Your Welsh Springer Spaniel to Sit: Acquaint Her With The Words

Stop her from pitching forward by securing 1 hand underneath her chin and using the other hand dangle her reward above the Welsh Springer Spaniel’s face. Keep saying deliberately and distinctly, “sit up.” Don’t make her sit too long at any one time, however repeat the instruction routinely and reward her frequently with plenty of kudos and treats.

Teach Your Welsh Springer Spaniel to Sit: Help Her Maintain Balance

In the initial lesson your Welsh Springer Spaniel will need significant help from you to stop her from pitching forward, but as she gets better control of the balancing muscles and grasps what you want her to do, she will count less and less on your hand to hold her steady. The next step is she should be set up against the wall, so as to offer her support for her back. After she has gotten the knack of this and can keep her position effortlessly, practice with her using chair legs, pillows or other things that give her less and less assistance. In the end she will figure out how to sustain her balance and sit without something to lean against.




Teach Your Welsh Springer Spaniel to Sit: Putting It All Together

During all these lessons the words "sit up" will have been ingrained upon her mind with the assistance of constant repetition. Last comes the final lesson to teach your Welsh Springer Spaniel to sit up immediately after she hears the command. It's highly likely, if she has been carefully instructed, you will just have to get her out in the room, show a reward, hold it up a suitable distance from the ground, say "sit" and she will do so. Then just give her the snack while still in place.

The only prerequisite for flawlessness is to rehearse with your Welsh Springer Spaniel several times daily until she sits on command and without being shown a treat; give her the snacks only after she has adhered to the command.

You have now the basis for teaching your Welsh Springer Spaniel many other tricks. She can now be taught how to beg by waving your hand up and down just in front of her paws, which she'll move in conjunction with yours. She can also learn to salute by bringing one paw up to the side of her head, or to hold an object in her mouth, or to wear a cap on her head or wear other clothes.

While training a Welsh Springer Spaniel to tolerate being dressed up, don't try to make her wear too many things at one time. Try at first with a hat. After she becomes used to that you could put on a jacket and incrementally introduce her to more garments.
