How To Teach Your Welsh Sheepdog To Sit

Teach Your Welsh Sheepdog to Sit

Are you aspiring to teach your Welsh Sheepdog to sit? The skill of sitting up is quite easily taught to very small dogs, but much larger pet dogs are another story. It is tricky for them to maintain their equilibrium.

Teach Your Welsh Sheepdog to Sit: Planning

Sitting is one of the 1st techniques that you should teach to a Welsh Sheepdog and forms the ground work for lots of other techniques. To train a Welsh Sheepdog to sit up, prepare some snacks as a reward, and put your Welsh Sheepdog on her butt in the corner, so that she can not fall either backward or sideways and has very little or no room to lose balance.

Teach Your Welsh Sheepdog to Sit: Acquaint Her With The Command

Keep her from pitching to the front by keeping one hand on her chin and using the other hand hold the treat above the Welsh Sheepdog’s nose. Keep repeating deliberately and clearly, “sit.” Don’t force her to sit up too long at one time, however repeat the instruction often and reward her often with plenty of cheers and snacks.

Teach Your Welsh Sheepdog to Sit: Help Her Balance

During her initial lesson she will call for quite a bit of help from you to prevent her from tumbling forward, but as she gains better control of her balancing muscles and comprehends what you want, she will rely less upon your hand to keep her steady. Then you can gradually give her less help and support till you will simply have to maintain one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her chin or neck, to be available to stop her falling forward; later you might remove the hand completely and merely suspend the snack right over the height of her head.

Teach Your Welsh Sheepdog To Sit: Remove the Assistance Eventually

After frequent practice she will stay seated long after you tell her to. Afterward she should be set against the wall, so as to give her support for her back only. When she has gotten the hang of this and can maintain her position easily, practice with her using chair legs, cushions or other items that give her less and less aid. Gradually she will learn to maintain her balance and sit up without relying on anything to rest on.

Teach Your Welsh Sheepdog to Sit: Putting It All Together

During all these lessons the phrase "sit up" will have been ingrained upon her mind by regular repetition. Now is the final training to teach your Welsh Sheepdog to sit up right after she hears the command. There's a good chance, if she has been diligently trained, you will just have to get her out in the room, show her a snack, hold it up a reasonable distance from the floor, say "sit up" and she will obey. Then you'll just give her the snack while still in place.

The only necessity for flawlessness is to train with her several times daily until she can sit on command and without being shown a treat; give her the snacks only after she has adhered to the direction.

Teach Your Welsh Sheepdog Other Tricks

You have now the foundation for teaching your Welsh Sheepdog many other skills. She can now learn how to beg by moving your hand up and down in front of her paws, which she'll move in coordination with yours. She can also learn to salute by moving one paw to the side of her head, or to hold something in her mouth, or to wear a hat on her head or wear other articles of clothing.

When instructing a Welsh Sheepdog to submit to being clothed, don't try to make her wear too many items simultaneously. Try at first with just a cap. After she becomes accustomed to that you can put on a coat and eventually introduce her to more clothing.

Get a kick out of "teaching your Welsh Sheepdog the sit up trick" and most importantly have fun while you're doing it!
